The
far sounds of the Pacific attracted hundreds of thousands to Western
Springs Lakeside – West of Auckland. The event was
described by one of the Tongan organisers Ms. Vaka’uta, as
the most successful Pasifika compared to previous years.
Representatives of Pacific Island ethnic groups showed off
their traditional customs and creative products in their allocated
village areas. The Tongan village featured stalls of Tongan
handicrafts, food, dances, music and much more. Some of the
stalls collected $3,000 to $4,000. One stall owner said,
“this is a lot of money to collect in one day and she
can’t wait for another one next year”.
Tongan
village M.C Mr. No’opose estimated the numbers of people who
visited the Tongan village at approximately 4,000 people every hour.
The visitors were thoroughly entertained with dances and
singing from various church youth groups and individuals. Peni Makisi
and Indira Moala also gave the visitors a taste of their vocal power.
Noble Baron Vaea of Houma attended the festival and seemed to
enjoy the event. Prime Minister Helen Clark told TNEWS that
she’s enjoying herself and this was the place to be on the
day, although she acknowledged the tremendous heat which saw drinking
water in strong demand.
Braving
the heat and surrounded by bodyguards and fellow Labour Party members,
the Prime Minister addressed the people in the Tongan village
encouraging them to enjoy the day.
The
number of people who turned up to the Pasifika Festival is estimated to
be approximately 250,000 to 300,00 people.
Organisers
are looking forward for another successful event next year.
