Prime Minister Samiuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, today told TNEWS that he was so happy when he visited the Tongan RSE workers and the farmers in Nelson last weekend. The Prime Minister shared how the boys are happy and well looked after by their employers. He specifically pointed out that the living conditions are of great satisfaction, and he thanked the NZ govt, Employers and Representative Sefita Hao’uli for all their effort they have put into this project.
He said it is obvious all parties are beneficials from this. The Tongan families, the farmers and both countries as well.
The Prime Minister went on to say, that there is only one problem he envisaged, and that when Tongan men are coming to NZ and Australia to work for 7 months, they leave behind their spouse and children in Tonga. Sometimes enemies can take advantage of the situation, but he will go back and see if they can do something to avoid this problem.
RSE has become the second largest economical contributor to Tonga’s economy which typically relies heavily on overseas remittances.
