The Tongan Parliament has voted in support of Government plans to buy back the Shoreline electricity company.
Shoreline is a private company in which King George Tupou V has a significant shareholding.
In the Budget in May the Government allocated 25 million pa’anga, or nearly 14 million US dollars, for the buy back.
The Tonga Broadcasting Corporation quotes Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, as saying Parliament on Tuesday voted by an overwhelming majority to back the re-purchase of the electricity assets.
However, three People’s Representatives, Akilisi Pohiva, ’Isileli Pulu and ’Uliti Uata, opposed the move, while Clive Edwards was not in the House, though Dr Sevele says he had indicated his support for the purchase.

This is why we are not being successful in our struggle, as we appear to the government to be divided. All of our PRs should communicate and discuss all issues before the final vote in the House as we are shooting ourselves in the foot so to speak.

All the discussions on this forum about this issue have avail to nothing and not effective. We need everyone to be united, so that we can all send out the same message to the government and the world.

We need serious and constructive discussions in this forum by asking questions starting with 'what', where, why, and how we can achieve our struggle and less playing the 'blame game'. malo
You are so right.

All the discussions about anything in all forums amount to simply nothing...Thats why we need to have OUR representation iniside the parliament whereby there is at least the ability for what we want to be voted for.

Just imagine what the outcome would have been if the parliament was selected by the people rather than the king. The king would never suceed in getting his ransom since he does not "Own" any of the members of parliament.

Under the current system, if any of the kings representatives vote against him (as has happened in the past) then they commit political suicide, and are sacked.

That is why Sevele has stated that the majority voted for the payment of the Shoreline ransom. If they didn't, then those voting against it would be sacked by the king...of course the PR's cannot be sacked by the king since they are not appointed by him.

ROLL ON POLITICAL REFORM.

You're saying that Clive and the rest of the PRs were elected by the King? You are rationalising and still misleading the truth, and I am beginning to doubt that you are serious about the Reform as you appear to be a Revolutionist rather than a Reformist.

Should I say, Viva! The Revolution????

My dear friend. In my old age sourrounded by my children I find comfort knowing that they are my eyes and ears.

You however need to consult a optomitrist and get some glasses.

Please show me where I said that Clive and the rest of the PR's were elected by the king??

The truth cannot be mislead, regardless of what you or I say or write. Time is the revelaer of the truth, and with the effort of like minided people we can push along that time to assist in revaling the truth of what the PM and king have been doing behind our backs.

Our poor brothers and sisters need political reform. The least we can do as a family is to support them by exposing the political corruption that keeps them poor.

Calling me or others "revolutionists" only encourages others ito action to look at why change is needed. When the surface is scratched its easy to see why there is a need for political change. Call it Revolutionist if you like, call it desperate measures by loving people of Tonga too, call it what you like. We dont care.

The more resistance to political reform, the more will we grow, expose and push to have our freedom.

What I am saying is that our PRs were not united in their vote as only three voted against the buy back and Clive and the rest of the PRs obviosly supported the government.

We all want the political reform, and all of the PRs and the people must be united to effectively put any pressure on the government and I believe that this division is the problem with the reform.
Sorry Icnnj, the reform has been signed into law.

Good observation, but the reformed has be legalized.
