A 22-year-old Tongan man drowned after being swept out to seas in front of his family in the Coromandel at the weekend.
Police said the man had been fishing with a large group, including family, when he got into trouble and disappeared trying to retrieve a set net from the surf on Saturday night.
His body was found washed up on Waihi beach by a member of the public about 8am yesterday.
Sergeant Steve Hindmarsh, of Waihi police, said the man's name would not be released until tomorrow, because police were still trying to contact his father.
The man had been in New Zealand on a working visa and living in Katikati.
