A former Tonga Cabinet Minister, who’s contesting her first election, says the people have told her the cost of living is their biggest concern.
Alisi Taumoepeau was appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice in 2006, but later resigned, accusing the Prime Minister Dr Feleti Sevele of interference.
She says the manner of that exit prompted her to stand as the country embraces a more democratic system.
Ms Taumoepeau says for the first time the candidates, especially the women, are focussing on door to door canvassing.
She says she’s also had students conduct a survey of what the people want.
“Electricity is too expensive, the water is too expensive - it’s just the cost of living - that’s the main thing they are after. There are five things there and one of that is good leadership, equal opportunities, more opportunity for women and land rights and support for the change but make it a change for the better.”
