Sevele says that the AID won't buy influence but I think the point is: The Tongan government was not elected by the people so their decision to have $100m loan from China involved the people automatically and involuntarily who would have to repay the loan in years to come.
Sevele says it won't buy influence but that is what he says. It may or it may not come out right but in the meantime that is what he says. I don't know how loan securities are arranged or made at international level especially between governments but I am sure that what was not clear to us (ie. to those who demanded a reply from him) about this loan was how it will be secured. Instead of answering 'how?' Sevele twisted his response and instead talked about 'AID not buying influence' which wasn't what they asked for.
They did ask for fish once and Sevele gave them snakes and Nuku'alofa burnt to the ground on 16/11. I am afraid for they have asked twice already for fish. We will decide what was given to them this time by what will happen next. So what happens next will be decided by Sevele - whether it will be fish or snakes he will give.
