Tonga's Police Commander, Christopher Kelly

A Tonga MP says he suspects politicians are behind a petition by police officers calling for the removal of the newly-appointed Police Commissioner, Chris Kelley.

The petition, signed by about 150 officers, was submitted to the Prime Minister last week and recommendations on a response to it are expected from a special committee next week.

The petition opposes the Tonga Police Act 2010 and attendant restructuring of the police force.

Akilisi Pohiva, the leader of the Friendly Islands Democratic Party, said it’s a very delicate issue.

“I was very shocked when I found out last week that some senior people in the police department organised that petition because to me my assessment is that I liked the way the Police Commander carried out his duties in the past two years.”

Pohiva said his assessment’s based on discussions with several of the country’s top lawyers.

Meanwhile, the president of a Tonga women and children’s NGO is defending the performance of the newly-appointed Police Commissioner, Chris Kelley, in the wake of a petition calling for his removal.

Ma’a Fafine Moe Famili’s Betty Blake said one of the main areas of work for her organisation, domestic violence, was not a priority for either the police or the government before Mr Kelley took over as Police Commander in 2008.

“Like what I say it was not easy to work with the police and it was regarded as a terrible subject to talk about domestic violence in public, talk about women abused or child abuse in public. But ever since the Police Commander was in Tonga I’ve felt so good and so greatly relieved that someone is there speaking the same language that we have tried to advocate for in our society.”.

So Chris Kelley has to go as he has the 'audacity' to address 'Domestic Violence' (women & children), 'Graft & Corruption' in high places. Who are the politicians against the Commissioner ? Discussions of alleged drug-dealers within Parliament & Government is a serious cause for concern.

Who would want to go back to the dark age of beating up wives? Maybe it someone who feels like beating up on the wife makes him a man, a beast man.
Nau, The 'dark age' of wife-beating and child-abuse is today. It currently happens all around us and we all know that politicians today with high public office are some of the worst offenders. Tongans should push for Tonga's accession to CEDAW and to make our membership on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child more pro-active and meaningful.

'Oku ou tokanga au pe koe ha e tu'unga 'oku 'i ai 'a e Minisita Polisi 'i he tu'u 'a e me'a ni. What is his position on this? He oughts to give us an explanation. The public is very much concerned as this is one of the security forces of the country. Or is he a party to the conflict? Appropriate authority should already have gone on media to address this issue. It is not a case that should be settled and watered down internally.

I personally think Kelley has shown outstanding performance so far and by far... and who is going to takeover from him if the petitioners succeed...? Taniela F..... noo waaayyyy... We have all witnessed the extent of his ability. Who else in the Ministry? No one... other than Kelley. The issues such as drugs and unlawful arms are serious cases I trust only Kelley can handle well.

'Oku mahu'inga pe ketau 'oatu 'etau ngaahi fakakaukau ki he kaveinga ni koe'uhi he ko hotau pule'anga pea 'oku malava ke uesia kitautolu katoa mei ha lelei pe kovi 'o e tu'utu'uni aofangatuku 'e fakahoko fekau'aki mo e kaveinga ni.

There are quite a number of serious and delicate cases and issues to be addressed at this very crucial point of time and I believe only an independent Police Commissioner like Kelley can help Tonga resolve them in a much professional and appropriate manner.

I guess it should always be helpful for us to look at the bigger picture rather than personalizing the issues. I vote for Kelley.

Ko e me'a 'e taha, ko e kau Polisi ko ia ne fakamo'oni 'i he tohi launga 'oku ki'i ta'epau pe ko honau loto totonu ia pe ko e fakakouna'i kinautolu 'e he kau paipa Polisi. Manatu'i ko e me'a mahu'inga foki 'a e fakatu'utu'unga 'i he Polisi. Pea ko 'ene pehe atu pe 'a e kau 'Inisipekita ma'olunga 'oku nau fehi'a ki a Kelley ki he kau junior, mou oo 'o fakamo'oni mai he, ko 'enau fakamo'oni ia.
