President of The Church of Tonga Rev. Feke Mafi.

President of the Church of Tonga, Rev Dr Feke Mafi, has been charged by a contingent of his New Zealand parishioners accusing him of wrongful use of Church money, and using his position to register a company in the name of his brother and himself.

This is not a an issue raised at a criminal court but rather the “court” of the annual Conference of the Church of Tonga, which began Monday 9 May.

A minister of good standing with the church, Rev Sione To’a raised the issue on the very first session of the conference.

A company called Mana is alleged to have lost hundreds of thousands of the church’s money. This company loaned out money, and is alleged to have run into financial difficulties because of default payments from borrowers.

According to Rev To’a’s allegations, the President registered Mana under his own name together with his brother. The President is also alleged to have registered the New Zealand branch of the company under the name of his niece. People in the church, according to the charges, have thought that these companies belonged to the church because it is the church’s money used in the transactions.

As chairman of the first session of the conference, which was restricted only to ordained ministers of the church, the President stepped aside, and allowed Rev Dr Manase Tafea to take over the chairmanship so the allegations can be tabled and put on the agenda.

The Church conference continues today, and it is expected that these charges against President Mafi will be brought up for debate at the appropriate time.

The contingent that is bringing the charges against the President is calling for his resignation from his position.

Caution : It is noted that the use of the word "charges" is misleading as it gives the wrong impression as if the President is criminally charged in the Courts. This is NOT the case as these are complaints to Conference at best. The Church Constitution ought to be carefully looked at. Care must be taken to ensure that due process has been followed i.e. for the matter to have been brought up to Conference through the lower meetings of the church (fakavahefonua & kuata). What role if any was played by the Conference/Church Secretariat & Treasurer ? The Ministers Conference should be limited to ordained Ministers only & not for the whole world to know. What is made public are the decisions in the Conference Minutes.

This is so fakama, this man should be held accountable for his action, (in a legal sense). People like my parent work extremely hard to give what little they have to church for misinales etc.... and i know its not forced in anyway, but to have these faifekau play around with their hard earned money like their enititled too is not only insulting but just down right wrong

President of The Church of Tonga Rev. Feke Mafi.

President of the Church of Tonga, Rev Dr Feke Mafi, has been charged by a contingent of his New Zealand parishioners accusing him of wrongful use of Church money, and using his position to register a company in the name of his brother and himself.

This is not a an issue raised at a criminal court but rather the “court” of the annual Conference of the Church of Tonga, which began Monday 9 May.

A minister of good standing with the church, Rev Sione To’a raised the issue on the very first session of the conference.

He addressed the meeting asking that Rev Mafi step aside from being the chairman, because he was bringing charges against him for misuse of funds and Presidential privilege.

Rev To’a happens to be the son of former President of the Church of Tonga, Rev Lehopoame To’a Tonga’onevai. Rev To’a is a minister in New Zealand, and has been in the ministry of the church for over 30 years.

A company called Mana is alleged to have lost hundreds of thousands of the church’s money. This company loaned out money, and is alleged to have run into financial difficulties because of default payments from borrowers.

According to Rev To’a’s allegations, the President registered Mana under his own name together with his brother. The President is also alleged to have registered the New Zealand branch of the company under the name of his niece. People in the church, according to the charges, have thought that these companies belonged to the church because it is the church’s money used in the transactions.

As chairman of the first session of the conference, which was restricted only to ordained ministers of the church, the President stepped aside, and allowed Rev Dr Manase Tafea to take over the chairmanship so the allegations can be tabled and put on the agenda.

The Church conference continues today, and it is expected that these charges against President Mafi will be brought up for debate at the appropriate time.

The contingent that is bringing the charges against the President is calling for his resignation from his position.

There is always an explanation behind the facts. Just want to wish Feke Mafi well. I will pray for this, and hope everyone pray also. Whatever the outcome is, just hope is for the best of everyone and the church. We love you Feke, and also my regards to Sione To'a's family.
