Emeli Moala Pouvalu of Kolomotu'a.
The Ministry of Education, Women's Affairs and Culture wishes to announce that Ms Emeli Moala Pouvalu of Kolomotu'a has assumed duties as the new Director of the Ministry, starting on Monday 2nd of May, 2011.
Ms Pouvalu brings to the post a wealth of experience in the field of education that is uniquely suited to the needs of the country in this most important area.
Emeli attended Tonga High School, where she passed the New Zealand University Entrance Exam in 1972. She continued her studies at the University of the South Pacific, USP, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Graduate Diploma in Education.
Upon her return to Tonga, Ms Pouvalu served as a teacher in the various Government secondary schools, including those in the outer islands.
In 1999, Emeli completed studies towards her MA in Education Policy and Administration from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
Before continuing her career with the USP in 1999, Emeli Moala Pouvalu served in senior level positions in the many divisions of the Ministry, including Tonga Teacher's College, Policy and Planning, and Administration.
Ms Pouvalu was also in charge of the administration of the National Commission for UNESCO, headed the Scholarship Division and helped to establish and administer the Community Development and Training Center, CDTC.
Prior to His Majesty's Cabinet's approval of her appointment to be the Director of the Ministry of Education, Women's Affairs and Culture, with effect from May 2nd 2011, Emeli Moala Pouvalu was the Director of the College for Foundation Studies at the USP, Fiji, a postion that she held for twelve years.
Whilst at USP, Ms Pouvalu had the opportunity to serve on the University's highest decision making body, the University Council.
Speaking of her appointment to be the Director of the Ministry of Education, Women's Affairs and Culture, Emily said that, "I am very happy that the Hon. Minister has accepted me to come in and help shoulder the burden of this calling, and to assist her in serving the children of our nation."
Ms Emily Moala Pouvalu said that she looks forward to working together, under the leadership of the Minister, Hon. Dr. ‘Ana Maui Taufe'ulungaki, with teachers, parents, churches and development partners to ensure that the children of Tonga reach their highest potential in the pursuit of their education.
