First Casualty for 2008
The police report issued last week reported the first ever drowning victim for 2008, a 73-year old male from Kameli in Vava’u.
It is alleged that the victim had gone diving and had drowned in the process. The victim is the first recorded casualty for this New Year.
The police also reported a suicide that occurred on the very last day of 2007.
The 30-year old male victim is alleged to have taken his own life on New Year’s Eve in Kolofo’ou.
This latest suicide brought the number of deaths by suicide last year to a total of 9, compared to 6 in 2006.
Woman Appears in Court for Defrauding Bank of Thousands of Dollars
A 36-year old woman appeared in the Magistrate Court last week for defrauding the ANZ Bank of more than $160,000 pa’anga.
The woman, Tonga Fukofuka Fifita of Tatakamotonga, was deported from Fiji earlier last week after the Tonga police alerted their Fiji counterparts to the situation.
According to Fijivillage news, Fifita was then arrested from a Nadi hotel and deported to Tonga to face criminal charges. It is alleged that Fifita was on her way to Samoa after fleeing to Fiji.
