Speaker of the House Lord Lasike announces in Parliament the hiring of his mistress son.
No opposition for conflict of interest
TONGA’S Parliament was unperturbed by the announcement by the Speaker of the House, Lord Lasike during the Budget debate, that the son of his mistress, Sandra Schaaf, was hired as the Graphic Designer for Parliament, and is being paid from the Parliament’s estimate.
Sitalini Naufahu, son of Schaaf, works “to put together pamphlets and videos as tools of Parliament to be used in outreach to the school programs,” the Speaker told the House last week. He wanted the House members to know that “this young man” paid from the House estimate is the son of his “friend.”
The job Naufahu was awarded was not advertised to the public, like the usual procedures for hiring of Parliament workers.
The brother of the Speaker’s mistress is also a hired hand in Parliament, as confirmed by the Chief Clerk, Sione Tekiteki.
Schaaf is also a regular attendant at the office of the Speaker, but according to the Chief Clerk, she is there only as a helper to the Speaker, and does not get paid from “Parliament funds.”
Questions of conflict of interest have been raised concerning the Speaker and his mistress, her son, and brother and their association with the House.
But, members of Parliament do not seem to see it that way. They have not raised any questions in the House, and do not seem to see there is anything odd about the Speaker’s mistress working for him, an her son and brother being employees of the House.
Notes that in previous years, conflicts of interest such as have been questioned, would have been vigorously opposed by the people’s representatives. However, in this new democratic government, issues involving conflict of interest have not been addressed.
