Preparation for the Construction of Government Building, St George Palace, Starts

The preparation for the construction of the Government Building to be known as St George Palace has started on Monday 10 August at Pangai Si’i in Nuku’alofa. The staff of the Ministry of Infrastructure has started clearing the site by taking down the trees and other objects in the area.

The containers of building materials for the construction will start arriving on Tuesday 11th of August 2015. A ground breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction will be held toward the end of this month.

The St George Palace Project is a multi-million pa’anga project that is funded through a grant from the People’s Republic of China to the Government of Tonga. The construction was originally planned to start in November 2014 but it was deferred to August 2015 so that the Celebration of Their Majesties Coronation are completed.

The construction will be conducted by the Shanghai Construction Group Ltd of the People’s Republic of China and the construction period is approximately 20 months.

The St George Palace will be four storey high and upon its completion will house Government Ministries including the Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Finance and National Planning, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It will also have Offices and Meeting Rooms for Government purposes.
