His Excellency Mr Kazuyuki Nakane Parliamentary Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs was received by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala. His Royal Highness, The Crown Prince, noted with appreciation all assistance the Government and people of Japan provided for the improvement for the lives of his people. His Royal Highness stressed the challenges of Climate Change, the importance of human resource development education of his people and moving towards sustainable development.
Hon Akilisi Pohiva , Prime Minister of Tonga and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade also welcomed and met with His Excellency Mr Kazuyuki Nakane, Parliamentary Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan. This meeting of Friday 20th February, 2015 was held at the Prime Minister’s Office and included Hon Mr Siaosi Sovaleni, Deputy Prime Minister and relevant Government officials present.
The Honourable Prime Minister also thanked the Government and the people of Japan for all assistance in infrastructure, education, health and energy sectors of Tonga. And noted the continuation of the payment of the disaster insurance premiums this year by Japan, in the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance (PCRIP) where Ha’apai benefitted in 2014.
The discussions included the upcoming PALM 7 Summit and the letter of invitation from Prime Minister Abe of Japan for the PALM 7 Summit May 2015 in Iwaki Fukushima was presented. The UN World Conference on Disaster Reduction March 2015 in Sendai was discussed and the Hon Prime Minister noted that Tonga would be represented. The Hon Prime Minister further spoke on the importance of Trade, Fisheries, Sports and other challenges such as rising unemployment and non-communicable diseases and looked forward to working closely with Japan on these issues.
His Excellency Nakane thanked the Hon Prime Minister for the warm welcome and that Japan valued the partnership with Tonga. He further stated that the Government of Japan looked forward to continuing to support the further development of the Kingdom of Tonga.
Honourable Vice Minister Nakane was welcomed and farewelled by Hon Fe’ao Vakata Minister of Internal Affairs at Fua’amotu Airport on 21st Feb 2015.
